Hey everyone!
I have a new Mini Album to share today for Simple Stories, using the new Homegrown
collection. We seem to be spending a lot of time at the farm lately so this
collection is perfect for my photos and it is also completely adorable! I love
all the farm animals and there are so many fun things in this collection.
I planned
to make a mini album with this collection and figured I might make it square
but when I was looking through the Bits & Pieces, I came across this super
cute red barn and that totally sparked an idea to make the album in the shape
of the barn! I focused on the main barn shape and roughly drew it onto a piece
of copy paper. After several attempts I was happy with the shape so I cut it
out and used it as a template. I have used the Homegrown 6x8” paper pad for
most of this album.
I used the
template and cut the shape from red woodgrain paper. I then cut a few details
to go onto the front cover: the strip at the bottom of the barn, the roof and
the door. I cut the door from white card, by hand because I was actually away
on holiday while I was making this so I didn’t have any access to a printer or
my Silhouette machine! And then I cut that out, including all the criss-cross
sections. I backed the door with green paper and made cuts so the door would
actually open and then attached this to the front cover. I added hand stitching
around all the details on the cover and also machine stitched the door in place
(I had to wait until I was home to do this part!)
For my
internal pages and the back cover, I continued to use the template I made at
the start, to cut pages the same size as my barn. I cut two for each page:
front and back. This was so that I could use the ‘hidden hinges’ method for
binding my album.
To make the
binding, I cut a long strip of white card and I scored it at regular intervals
to make the bits that stand out. I made five of these, plus the ones for the
front and back covers. I was then able to sandwich my pages over the hinges
which completely covers them – they cannot be seen now the book is complete. I
covered the spine with turquoise polka dot paper from the Homegrown 6x8 paper
pad. I also machine stitched around the edge of each of my pages.
I then
added my photos and embellishments to the inside of the album. I had quite a
lot of photos so I made sure I had several ways to include multiple photos:
such as fold outs, pockets and overlays. I love to have a good mix of
interactive elements in my mini albums. I used vellum to make some and for
others I used sections of the Homegrown patterned papers.
I used
loads of the Bits & Piece and Journal Bits. I adored the sunflower
elements. I also used a lot of the Foam Stickers, Decorative Brads and Puffy
Stickers. The Puffy Stickers are ideal for mini albums because they are really
small so are perfect for adding cute details to photos or other small elements.
I made one
of the pages into a large shaker pocket by cutting a piece of acetate to the
same size as the page. I machine stitched around the edge leaving an opening
which I then filled with sequins and then closed up. I also made a vellum pocket
for this page, to hold a mini tag album, made from the Tags sheet of paper.
For the
closure, I used two small bulldog clips tied through with two ribbons tied in a
bow. I can’t take credit for this as I learned it at a scrapbooking class many
years ago, but it is an absolutely awesome way to keep an album closed because you
don’t have to untie the bow! I added cute charms to the bow, a sheep and a
chicken. There is also a tractor charm inside the mini album. To open the book
I simply need to unfasten one of the bulldog clips but the bow remains tied.
I really
hope you have enjoyed this mini album, I loved making it and adore how it has
turned out. My little boy who is three, absolutely loves looking through it
with me, particularly photos of him and all the fold out sections!
Happy scrapping
Niki xx
